The Unconscious We

Humans live and believe on a very small niche with very small set of events leading to there decisions and faithfulness to an any particular outfit. In psychology the case of classical conditioning is quite famous and very applicable as well. Behavior of people can be modified within a considerable time. Do you think government or any other organization don't use it for there gains. In a laymen term I will explain you the phenomenon with a simple case. Let say a simple decent beautiful girl sees a handsome muscular guy saving a dogs from an accident, she will obviously think and create a good impression about him even though the man might be trying to kill the dog and by accident saves the dog. The impression in the girls mind will remain good until and unless she finds more details about him. On the other hand the man might be a real idiot but if he manages to hide his abominable half of his life then he might not even enjoys the goodwill of the girl but also probably get into an relationship as well. However the results can be completely opposite if the reality is reveled or anyone jealous of that guy create a wrong impression about him.

On a more simpler and general lines every one has a conscious and unconscious world. No matter what you do in the unconscious world of that person the person will not be affected or show any response to it but if it comes to its consciousness then a response is very much expected. The incredible power of this unconscious world is appreciated in many forms by many intellects and this has given us many boons as well as great disasters. I can recall a wonderful example from a video lecture of a quite famous person who demonstrated the unique social unity which a pencil can create. A pencil which look like a very simple object has a huge production industry spread across the world where each unit produce, make or assemble some or the other part of the pencil. In-spite of the huge social differences among the units, their unconscious world brings them together under the umbrella of pencil industry. Banking and economies of the country also plays quite a lot with our unconscious world, which is good or bad, is hard to comment on but it gave rise to lot of conspiracy theories. The list is endless and from bigger prospective we can accept that our inability to understand each system create these boundaries exposing us to get manipulated by anyone who know about it.

Our ability to make decision from a small samples occurrence in the little world around us and existence of huge unconscious world created a good prospects which can be used by governments to implements good policies, companies to sell there goods, social workers to spread awareness and many more. Well, there are possibilities other way round as well, however I don't think I have to mention about them to make there existence felt.

A story in a city

The city glimmers with the setting sun. The lovers sitting on the river bank were ignorant of this beauty of the city. A dog came sniffing around, peed on the rear wheel, garbed a red packet from the auto and ran away.

Tahu was a normal street boy like other street boys whose face you never remember but encounter everyday in the passing crowd. Dark complexion, skinny physique and dirty clothes. A friend of mine, of-course from a rich background, think that all poor look alike and same goes for Tahu. I never dared to point out but I always differed from him on this prospect. I met Tahu at several occasions when he was not busy with his profession and found him equally appealing as my friend however the dressing may differ. I wonder is it the profession of the poor which make them appear this way or is it the poorness itself.

However that day was a different day, Tahu was wearing the suit which he always wear on any big events and had a hair cut, which made it further special. His Amma was wearing her brightest saree which can glow with a slightest light. Someone on the streets said "Tahu is going to see a bride". The fat guy replied scratching his armpit " Its not possible, his demand for dowry is too high, he asked 2 lakhs in cash from a distant cousin of mine. Who will give that much for an auto driver". But by the evening, the smile on Tahu's face and the golden ring in his finger was enough to say that everything has turned out fine this time.

Next day the street was filled with gossips and Tahu's dowry was one of them. The fat guy said " According to Tahu's Amma, he is getting 2.5 lakhs and a motorcycle in his dowry”. Promptly the short one replied "She must be exaggerating, she always do". The fat guy replied "No, No, it might be right , the girl's village is next to mine, her father have a big farm with no son but four daughters, this girl is the last one left for marriage and least beautiful too". He continued " She got many rejections, I will not be surprised if her father sell his farm and give three lakhs for her marriage. I think thats why they got the engagement done on the day itself".

Dowry, however illegal in the country, is a highly socially accepted phenomenon and more you get it, the prestigious it is. This fact was clearly reflected on Tahu's face. He took two days off from his work to celebrate his latest accomplishment. On the third day he woke up late, had lunch, and head towards the bank to keep his ring in a safe. To be safe, he put the ring in a red bag and kept it in a tool box of his auto. But before he can reach the bank one of his faithful customer came in for an important ride which he could not turn down. That ride turn out to be longer than expected and he failed to reach the bank on time. While returning back to home the rear wheel of the auto got punctured. He got the wheel out and left in frustration. After returning, while putting the wheel back he noticed that his bag with the ring was missing from his toolbox. He got infuriated and spent rest of the day searching for it.

Late night when he returned back with disappointment he saw his Amma sitting outside the house holding her head with couple of women consoling her. As soon as her eyes fell on him she ran towards him. Tahu was confused and before he can understand she said with teary eyes "Your bride ran away with her lover, your in-laws called an hour ago". She took a breath and continued "I don't know what to do now, the girl has brought so much shame to our family". Looking in Tahu's sad face she consoled "Beta we will get a better bride for you and for her deed we will not return the ring as compensation for the shame she has brought to us". Listening that Tahu sat on the floor and started crying.

Next day in the streets, the news of Tahu's bride again hit the news. The short guy said "Poor Tahu, he was so wretched with the news that he started crying on the spot itself". The fat guy replied while grabbing a samosa "I knew that girl was having an affair with that tailor, he was from my village. She use to visit his shop everyday. I would have never recommended that girl to Tahu if he had consulted me ". Listening to the newly grown sympathy of people for Tahu, a thought ran over my mind, was it the bride or the ring which which made him cry? Whatever be the case you all might be wondering how I came to know about the missing ring. Its simple, the dog was mine.

The two extremes

There are certain natural phenomenons in a society which will always exist no matter what is the situation. As we can't overcome our instincts, we can't overcome our flaws. Can I say flaws are part of society and in order to reinforce it I will take an example of the biggest democracy of the world, India. This democracy inherits another record of having the biggest constitution. But the interesting part is that the extreme of this multicultural society always escape this huge bulk of constitution. In the lowest extreme of poor tribal living in the lonely forests and the upper extreme of rich industrialist and public representatives living in sybarite metros. Recently I was going through a special edition of a nationally acclaimed magazine listing the richest youngsters in the country. I was expecting a trend of nepotism but the extent of it was tremendously beyond my expectation.

It was easy to observe several dynasties of industrialists who bug inside our lives in form of our needs and sap our money to pass it on to their next generation. Doesn't it indicate that there forefather did the same with our forefather's, so that they can do the same with us and the process can continue. Looking at the industrialist profiles I realized most of them are in 3rd to 6th generation of there industrial family line. Even in some cases they legacy continued from the time of Mughals. If the facts are true then isn't this indicate that no matter what is the status of the country, anarchist, imperialism, democracy, a part of richest strata always remain fixed. I wonder whether these changes affect there life at all. On the other extreme the tribal were tribal in all these situations and they are still not aware of any nation like India.

This thought sparked a revolt of ideas in my mind and took me to a frame where I see the whole nation with an alien eyes. The perception about the system made me feel that we are living in a democracy of not more than a name. Where rich get richer and poor get poorer , the unaware tribal not only remains unaware but also get exploited by the players of democracy.
